Troubleshoot Your Hearing Aids At Home

If you aren’t sure you need to bring your hearing aids in for repairs but you know something isn’t quite right, there are some steps you can take to troubleshoot your hearing aids at home.

  • Clean hearing aid battery contact points - After some time wearing your hearing aids, the battery contacts can develop a layer of debris between the battery and the hearing aid contact points. By cleaning the contacts, you may be able to clear up any scratchy or inconsistent sound quality.
  • Change out hearing aid batteries - If your hearing aids have become too quiet, then it might be the fault of your hearing aid batteries. Simply swap them out and see if that solves the issue.
  • Double-check settings - Sometimes, the only issue with your hearing aids is the setting. If the telecoil setting is on, the volume is too low, or the wrong hearing program is selected, it can interfere with your quality of sound.
  • Remove and re-insert hearing device - In many cases, if you are experiencing feedback sounds such as whistling or squealing, it can indicate that your hearing aids are not creating a good seal with your ear. By simply removing and re-inserting your hearing aids, you can correct most seal issues.
  • Have earwax removed - Compacted earwax can block sound from reaching you. To correct this, you can either come into one of our clinics for earwax removal or ask our hearing specialists about earwax drops you can use at home to loosen earwax blockage.
  • Clean your hearing aids thoroughly - Hearing aids are prone to becoming clogged with earwax and other debris, which can cause them to sound distorted or too silent. By cleaning your hearing aids thoroughly with a soft cloth and hearing aid pick, you may be able to take care of the problem at home.

Ways To Protect Your Hearing Aids

Ideally, your hearing aids will not repairs often over their 3-5 year lifespan if you take into consideration the various ways you can protect your hearing aids from damage

  • Avoid extreme temperatures - Like any other electronic devices, hearing aids don’t do well in extreme cold or hot temperatures. If you are wearing them in a cold area, try to keep your hearing aids covered with earmuffs or other headgear and avoid winter activities where they may fall off. In hot temps, try to provide your hearing aids with shade from a hat, and avoid leaving them sitting in direct sunlight.
  • Water-resistant is not waterproof - Many modern hearing aids are water-resistant, so they can put up with a certain amount of sweat and humidity. However, your hearing aids are not fully waterproof, so avoid activities where they can become wet and try to do your exercises without wearing them.
  • Always put your hearing aids in a case at night - Hearing aids left loose when taken out are at a higher risk of being knocked off the surface they are on and becoming damaged in some way. To prevent this, always put your hearing aids in a case or a hearing aid dehumidifier.
  • Regularly clean your hearing aids - Performing regular hearing aid cleaning can help keep your hearing aids in good working order. Also, you can bring your hearing aids into one of our hearing clinics for a professional hearing aid cleaning.
